Ikuyo SAKAMOTO
1953?2012, Kagoshima Prefecture
Sakamoto’s hand-embroidered works are characterized by the intricate layering of colorful threads, creating a high density and a sense of dimensionality. She began her unique embroidery practice in 1988, freely stitching onto fabric and developing her own expressive style. Using cotton fabric and vibrant threads, she often created circular works due to the use of embroidery hoops. Her stitching style involved randomly placing stitches, with each piece taking one to two months to complete. Her works feature a soft, three-dimensional texture, and their irregular thread patterns convey a harmonious blend of depth and vibrant colors, offering a truly original artistic vision.
