Kiyoshi TOYA
1969?, Shimane Prefecture
Toya creates bird’s-eye view depictions of urban landscapes based on the scenery he observes from the bus he takes to work or from his mother’s car. His work is characterized by a unique world where roads and vacant lots, in addition to buildings, are densely filled with neatly arranged cars, leaving no empty spaces. The cars in his drawings are modeled after real ones, and he references numerous car magazines to verify their shapes before drawing. For his artwork, he uses the reverse side of glossy calendar paper. He draws almost all the lines with a ballpoint pen and a ruler, moving the ruler in small increments. His drawing speed is remarkably fast, completing a single piece in about three and a half hours.
