Yukihiro KOKUBO
1974-, Kyoto Prefecture
Kokubo creates his art in a semi-private workspace, about the size of one tatami mat, within a welfare facility. Staff members provide him with several photographs, from which he selects one to base his work on. Through this process, he develops unique imagery that can be interpreted as both figurative and abstract. His works are created by repeatedly layering oil pastels and paints. His technique resembles embedding the medium into the surface rather than simply drawing. The repeated layering gives his pieces a powerful presence and a striking sense of depth.
