Kiyoshi TOYA
1969-, Shimane Prefecture
Toya’s work is based on landscapes he sees from the bus window on his way to work or from the windows of his mother’s car, which is seen from a bird’s eye view. His compositions show a mysterious worldview, in which all the space for streets and empty lots, unoccupied by buildings, is filled with cars neatly aligned on after another. Toya has car models to draw. When he draws, he has many car magazines spread out across his desk to check their shapes. He uses the backside of glossy calendar papers for his work and uses a ball point pen and a ruler to draw most of the lines. Moving the ruler in small increments, he swiftly draws each line and completes a piece of work in about three and a half hours.
